Test that is done to prove/disprove that the new build is worth continuing to test. The test aims to test extremely basic or critical areas in the product. If the test fails, it shows that something went wrong in the build or that something fundamental broke, which means that further testing is not worthwhile until the error is fixed.

Often these are automated tests, i.e. automatic scripts that run previously defined tests.
